Ash Hollow State Historical Park
Located 1/2 mile east and 3 miles south of Lewellen on U.S. 26, Ash Hollow State Historical Park is one of Nebraska’s most intriguing and unusual park areas. Ash Hollow is a cross section of High Plains history. Wood, shelter and a usable ford across the North Platte River made the canyon of Ash Creek a regular stopping place for travelers from the Oregon Trail wagon trains to parties of native Americans dating back at least 7,000 years, archeological evidence indicates.

Modern travelers can also stop to enjoy the well-maintained grounds at Ash Hollow State Historical Park. While there, they can view the deeply eroded ruts on Windlass Hill, where wagons were winched down a treacherous passage. They can also visit the cave shelter that migrating Indians used for thousands of years, view relics of the Blue Creek Massacre site near Ash Hollow and visit the tiny stone schoolhouse that served early settlers’ children. A Nebraska Park Permit is required.
